Ohio State University President Michael V. Drake used his annual address to the University Senate on Thursday to deliver good news for undergraduates, especially those attending the OSU regional campuses: A scholarship program that helped more than 12,000 low- and middle-income students this year will expand to help about 15,700 next year, and much of the help will go to regional-campus students. The President's Affordability Grant program, which gave out $15 million this year, will have $20 million next year. Qualifying students will get grants of $1,000 or $1,500each. Next year, at least 3,000 of the grants will go to students attending regional sites. This year's grants went only to students at the main Columbus campus. Drake has said funding for the grant program has come largely from savings generated by cutting costs. "We are honoring our promise of access to an affordable education — not at the expense of our academic and research excellence, but by operating a more efficient and innovative university," he said.
