Senate committee backs bills to defund abortion counseling, referralsThe Center for Medical Progress’ undercover videos allegedly showing medical professionals with Planned Parenthood discussing fetal tissue donations and procedures has provoked the ire of many conservative Kentucky Republican lawmakers. Two bills passed in a Senate committee Thursday in response from the scandal. Republican Sen. Max Wise of Campbellsville testified before the Senate’s Veterans, Military Affairs and Public Protection Thursday on two bills he has sponsored in response to the video footage. One of Wise’s bills, Senate Bill 7, announced as one of the Republican Senate Majority’s priority bills, would introduce a three-tiered system for controlling public funding dollars. “Kentucky would join other states such as Ohio, Texas and Kansas that have prohibited the use of state family planning funds for abortion counseling and referral, as well as, establish a priority system for distributing federal funding for family planning funds that place abortion service providers liked Planned Parenthood last in line for family planning dollars,” Wise said.
