Maryland House speaker objects to giving UM system chief raise, bonusHouse Speaker Michael E. Busch objected Thursday to a secret decision last week to award an extra $105,000 to the head of the University System of Maryland, calling the move inappropriate at a time when students are struggling to pay the costs of a degree. Busch, an Anne Arundel County Democrat, said a House of Delegates committee would hold an oversight hearing on the action by the system's Board of Regents during next year's General Assembly session, if not sooner. "The idea that the Board of Regents can meet in secret and give a $105,000 bonus to the head of the university system when kids are struggling to pay college tuition and going in debt, I think it's a poor reflection of the leadership of the university system," he said. The 17-member board is appointed by the governor. Regents serve five-year terms and appoint the chancellor and presidents at Maryland's 12 public colleges, including the flagship University of Maryland, College Park. Board members are not paid.
