PROVIDENCE – The General Assembly Thursday unanimously approved legislation to restore the Rhode Island Ethics Commission’s jurisdiction over lawmakers. The joint resolution, sponsored by Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello and President of the Senate M. Teresa Paiva Weed, puts a constitutional amendment before voters at the November general election that would close the legislative immunity loophole. Ethics reform has long been championed by Scituate Rep. Michael Marcello and Lincoln Sen. Ed O'Neill, among others. The legislation passed on votes of 72-0 in the House and 38-0 in the Senate, where it passed in concurrence. Since it is a joint resolution, it does not require a signature by the governor to become effective.
