Anne Arundel teachers union, school board at impasse over compensationThe Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County and the county Board of Education will go into mediation to resolve their conflicts in contract negotiations, which include disagreements over a request for a cost of living raise for teachers, extra-instructional pay and a midyear step increase. The school board voted Wednesday to approve its 2017 budget. The fiscal year starts July 1. While school board members praised the budget as "generous," three employee unions could not reach an agreement with the board on compensation. The budget allocated about $15 million for a step increase, or a salary increase based on experience, for eligible school employees. But some won't see that salary bump until their unions reach an agreement with the school board. School officials said there's no guarantee employees of those unions will receive retroactive pay.
